Catalogue of the cols of France “Le Chauvot”

History

The desire to create and publish a list of passes in France has existed since the creation of the Club (in 1972). From the first issue of the Club magazine (1973), the list of the Cols of the Northern Alps was drawn up by Marcel Bioud of Coublevie (Isère). In 1976, thanks to the efforts of many Club members, the first list of road passes covering the whole of France (1368 passes) was circulated. In 1981 Robert and Monique Chauvot published the first catalogue of the Cols de France – 7336 passes including 1531 road passes.

Description

Since 1994, the Club has taken over and has itself published: “8500 Cols France”, the famous “Bible Chauvot”, with 2 editions in 1994 and 1999.  The huge amount of work involved was carried out thanks to the information from many Club members, and in particular from those members cited below.  The third edition of this guide was produced in 2002 with the title “Catalogue des Cols de France”.
Those who helped with these first editions were Jean-Paul Bibes, Michel de Brebisson, Alain Gillodes, Michel Jeay, Philippe Meyer, Jean Perdoux, Nicole Poty, René Poty, François Rieu, Marc Liaudon, Henri Dusseau, Philippe Carrez.
Up to the present day (2020) the Catalogue des Cols de France is still maintained regularly by a group of experts with a new edition each year. The “France Working Group” is currently composed of Alain Brault, Philippe Carrez, Jean-Michel Clausse, Jean-François Plantard and Guy Ruffié. In addition to their own research, they obviously benefit from remarks or observations made by other Club members.

The catalogue includes more than 11,000 passes and covers the passes of metropolitan France (continent – Corsica) as well as those of overseas departments and regions and overseas collectivities (DROM-COM).

Computer version

The catalogue is available as a computer version that can be downloaded from the download page. The computer version gives, for each pass, 24 pieces of information: name(s), altitude, map coordinates, links to interactive maps, access to the pass, difficulty index, GPS coordinates, inclusion in THE TOPO Guides and permanent club hikes, etc.
The catalogue presentation document provides all the details of its contents. You can read it here (in French).
Each year, an update is published in the magazine of the Club des Cent Cols as well as on this website under Supplements. If you’ve added personal columns to your catalogue, you can use an “update tool” that allows you to integrate the year’s changes into your old edition without losing your personal columns.

Paper version

The paper version has been replaced by a PDF version, which can be bought also by non-members.
